Make Your Own Oat Milk In Three Easy Steps

A few years ago I switched to oat milk, mainly for environmental reasons. Inspired by a TikTok video I began making my own oat milk and I save a lot of money that way.
Here is my simple recipe

I use milk in my coffee, oatmeal, and sometimes in recipes. I always strive to reduce my environmental footprint and have researched the environmental impact of oat milk vs. cow milk.
Don’t get me wrong, as someone who grew up in a dairy farming community, switching away from cows’ milk was a big deal and took me a while.

Oat milk uses 60 per cent less energy, 80 per cent fewer carbon emissions and 80 per cent less land than cow’s milk, according to a 2021 study.

One of the problems with switching to alternative milk is the price. Buying oat, soy, or nut milk is a lot more expensive than conventional milk.

@kimsbudgetkitchen I’m NEVER buying Oat Milk again! The price is a total SCAM!! I can show you how to make it yourself in 2 min at home. Costs less than $0.50/litre and saves you $5-$6 every time! #oatmilk #oatmilkrecipe #savemoney #savemoneytips #makeitathome #cooking #easyrecipe ♬ original sound – Kim’s Kitchen

Then I watched this video by Kim and realized how easy it was to make my own.

As in the sourdough world, there are a lot of people whose instructions are overly complicated and almost make you give up on trying.

Follow Kim on TikTok! She has a lot of great tips for your kitchen!

I encourage you to experiment!

  • You can certainly make creamier oat milk; just add more oats and oil.
  • Try different oils! You need a little oil in your milk. We like avocado oil but you can certainly try olive oil or others that you have in the kitchen.
  • I noticed that my first batch of oat milk separated very quickly, but when I added a little lethicin to the mix, this improved greatly.
  • There are many different blenders. Ours has a “Liquify” setting that works well. But beware of blending too long, so your milk doesn’t warm up and gets slimy.

Whole Grain Sourdough Bread with Oat Milk Pulp

When you are done, you end up with a litre of fresh, delicious oat milk and some pulp. I developed a bread recipe that uses this oat pulp, so I don’t have to throw it away.

  • I use avocado oil but you can use any fat
  • Do not blend longer than 40 seconds or the milk will begin to be slimy
